The Australian wine industry has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by over 40% by 2030, by developing an ambitious plan.
The plan, developed by Wine Australia in collaboration with Edge Impact, a global sustainability consultant, aims to mitigate emissions generated in the vineyard, winery and supply chain. To achieve this goal, the plan highlights 11 initiatives, including increased integration of renewable energy into power grids, reducing the weight of wine bottles, using low-emission road transport, and purchasing 100% renewable electricity.
Although some measures are beyond the control of winegrowers, the plan points out that wineries still account for 22% of the sector's emissions, encouraging producers to take action to reduce their carbon footprint.
By focusing on efficiency, energy savings and the growing sustainability demands of the international market, the Australian wine sector hopes to offer a globally applicable model, making emissions reduction an essential component of future business practices.
