The number of bottles of whisky produced per barrel.

The process of creating a bottle of whisky is complex and sometimes unpredictable. Whiskey barrels play a crucial role in providing a stable container for maturation, also adding qualities to what ends up in your glass. Although the United States doesn't regulate the size of distillery casks, the most common whisky cask holds 53 gallons of unaged liquid. Before World War II, most standard whisky barrels held just 48 gallons. However, with the scarcity of wood during the war, American distilleries opted for larger capacity containers, reducing the number of barrels.

As whisky ages, it naturally loses some of its liquid through evaporation, known as the "angels' share". This phenomenon is influenced by a number of environmental factors, such as geographical location, climate, temperature change, cask composition and storage environment.

It is therefore difficult to determine exactly how many standard 750-milliliter bottles can be obtained from a common barrel. Some estimate average production at between 250 and 300 bottles, while others prefer a more conservative estimate of around 200 bottles.
