The wine bottle is set to become lighter in the next few years, thanks to an eco-friendly initiative led by the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR).
This organization, which includes major retailers and wineries such as Whole Foods Market and Virgin Wines, has discovered that consumers don't associate bottle weight with wine quality. As a result, SWR members have committed to reducing the average weight of 750-milliliter wine bottles from 550 grams to 420 grams by the end of 2026, which could reduce the carbon footprint of these wines by 12%.
This reduction in bottle weight is an important step towards reducing the ecological impact of wine packaging.
Many other wineries, although not officially part of SWR, are also taking part in this initiative. For example, Brooks Wine in Oregon has managed to switch to lighter bottles without changing the quality of their wine. Similarly, Alois Lageder in Italy developed a lightweight, stable bottle in collaboration with a Swiss glass manufacturer, then shared their unpatented design to encourage other wineries to follow suit.
These collective efforts show that sustainability in the wine industry is a growing priority, with beneficial results for the environment.
